Former Del Mar director Lanni dies at 68

J. Terrence Lanni, former MGM Mirage chairman and chief executive officer and member of the directors of the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, died on Thursday at age 68 following a battle with cancer.

Lanni served as a Del Mar director since 2001.

“We have lost a fine man and I’ve lost a dear friend,” said Joe Harper, Del Mar’s chief executive officer, president, and general manager. “Terry had great insights into both the gaming business and the racing world and we were lucky to have him on board with us this past decade. He will be dearly missed.”

Lanni was co-owner for 1999 Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) winner Silic (Fr) and Grade 1 winner Ladies Din, who was the 1998 Del Mar horse of the meeting.

Lanni joined MGM Grand in 1995 as CEO. In 2000, he oversaw the acquisition of Mirage Resorts by MGM Grand, which created MGM Mirage. He retired in 2008.

Funeral and memorial service plans are pending.
