Snyder, Charles Town Hall of Fame jockey, dies at 98

Posted: Sunday, June 19, 2011 6:35 PM

Retired jockey Web Snyder, a member of the Charles Town Racing Hall of Fame and a longtime fixture at the track, passed away on June 16 at his West Virginia home. He was 98.

After retiring from race riding in 1952, Snyder worked as an outrider at Charles Town for 14 years and subsequently served as a pony rider at the track into his ‘80s, retiring for good in 1995.  He was inducted into the Charles Town Hall of Fame in 2010, and a race on the Charles Town Classic undercard, the Web Snyder Stakes, is named in his honor.

“He was a legend here for sure,” said Charles Town General Manager of Racing Dickie Moore, who was a longtime friend of Snyder. “He was well liked by everyone and was a very, very knowledgeable horseman.”

Snyder was scheduled to ride seven horses on Charles Town’s first-ever live racing program in 1933 but a snowstorm delayed him as he traveled from Rockingham Park, where he rode the previous day, and he missed the inaugural card. He would make up for his late start the following day, riding his first winner at Charles Town on a filly named Dolled Up.

Snyder was born in Crabbottom, Virginia, on January 18, 1913. While growing up in the Staunton area, he became infatuated with horses and liked reminiscing about racing up and down the Shenandoah Valley as a teenager. He was one of the first members of the Jockeys’ Guild.

He served briefly in the Naval Reserve during World War II, receiving an honorable discharge because of the effects of racing injuries.

A good run. Retired from riding in '52. That says it all. Rest in peace.
