Horsemen plan to attend medication summit

When industry leaders discuss the sport’s medication issues Monday at Belmont Park, particularly the use of race-day Salix (furosemide) to prevent exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage (EIPH), horsemen plan to be in attendance.

New York-based trainer Richard Violette Jr., who chairs the New York Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association, said many trainers have paid the $40 ticket price to attend the “International Summit on Race Day Medication, EIPH and the Racehorse” Monday at Belmont Park.

Following presentations and panel discussions by industry leaders on Monday, representatives from the Racing Medication and Testing Consortium (RMTC) will meet privately on Tuesday. Besides the RMTC, the National Thoroughbred Racing Association and the American Association of Equine Practitioners are sponsoring the summit.

Salix, often referred to as Lasix, is commonly used in the U.S. on race day to prevent EIPH, bleeding in the horse’s lungs. U.S. regulators have called for an end to race-day medication within the next five years, which would include Salix. Industry changes to race-day medication policies also could help hold off federal oversight, which currently is being considered in Washington, D.C..

For Kelly Breen, race-day medication issues were important enough that the trainer addressed the topic moments after saddling Ruler On Ice to victory in the Belmont Stakes (G1).

“They have something going on at Belmont Park talking about the medication rules that are going on,” Breen said. “We have a horse that ran in the Kentucky Derby [Presented by Yum! Brands (G1)], Pants On Fire, that bled through Lasix. And I know it seems like everybody talks about the problems with medication and horses, but when you have a horse that you think that highly of, and you have something that we know stops horses from bleeding in Lasix, I don't understand why they're trying to take it away.”

While many horsemen favor current policy and have pointed to studies that show Salix is effective in treating EIPH, the Association of Racing Commissioners International said race-day medications create integrity problems, both real and perceived.

Barry Irwin, of Team Valor International, owner of this year’s Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom, said he has favored purchasing horses outside of the U.S. because race-day medication has made it difficult to evaluate Thoroughbred performance on U.S. tracks.

Among those scheduled to participate in the summit panel discussions are trainers Kiaran McLaughlin, who has trained in the U.S. and Dubai; Graham Motion, who trains in the U.S.; John Size, who trains in Hong Kong and Australia; and John Gosden, an English trainer who will submit a recorded message.

Participating veterinarians include John McVeigh (England, South Africa, France), Foster Northrop (U.S.), Rod Daniel (U.S. and Dubai), Treve Williams (Australia), and Rob Pilsworth (England, via prerecorded videotape).

Participating regulators include Denis Egan (Ireland), Bill Nader (Hong Kong), Brian Stewart (Hong Kong), and Anthony Stirk (England).

tony you are spot on,the most important people in any bussines are the customers, exept in racing, the owners get to have their say,the infractors(trainers)will be there pleading their case for continuing to cheat, and the customers will be ignored, after all who needs them right?.

Lasix should be banned on race day because it enables bleeders to win and produce more bleeders in the breeding shed. Also, it is a diuretic that lightens the horses weight and flushes other medication. Also it has side effects like leaching calcium which could be cumulative. Handicappers consider first race on lasix when handicapping - it enhances performance.

Short term great for the horse. Long term bad fot the breed.

A favorable statement regarding the use of lasix from a horse trainer!!! That's expected from a horse trainer. Why not have a few hardcore racing fans attend the summit. Someone who handicaps races on form, class, weight, distance etc., and bets accordingly. Let them state their views on what's wrong with the racing industry, not trainers or horsemen.
