Illinois Senate passes casino expansion bill

Illinois Thoroughbred and Standardbred track owners, horsemen, and breeders received a significant boost on Tuesday when the Illinois Senate passed a massive gambling expansion bill that will permit slot machines at the racetracks.
 
The bill on Monday passed the Illinois House of Representatives by a 65-50 margin with two voting "present.” By a vote of 30-27 Tuesday, the senate passed the biggest expansion of gambling in Illinois since 1990 and it will go to Gov. Pat Quinn for his signature. The governor has spoken against a huge expansion of gambling but has not threatened to veto the legislation if it passes.
 
In addition to letting the tracks have slot machines, the bill would bring five new casinos to the state—including one in downtown Chicago. That would increase the total number to 15.
 
Also included in the bill are slot machines at O'Hare International and Midway Airports in Chicago and an expanded harness meeting of from three to nine months at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield with slot-machine wagering allowed during the meeting.
 
The ten existing casinos would be permitted to expand.
