Michael Sherman, whose Farnsworth Farms garnered the Eclipse Award as outstanding breeder of 1996, died on May 7. He was 71.

Farnsworth was drastically reduced for estate planning purposes beginning in 2005, including the sale of two farms in Ocala. Sherman lived in Keystone Island, Florida, and retained an active stable and campaigned Grade 1 winners Gozzip Girl and Jessica Is Back over the last two years along with graded stakes winners Cherokee Queen, Speak Easy Gal, and Jet Propulsion.

At its peak, Farnsworth was the leading North American breeder of stakes winners in 1994 and 1995 with 21 in each of those years. During a four-year span, two mares produced by the operation collected victories in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff (G1) and received Eclipse Awards as champion older female.

Jewel Princess kicked it off when she prevailed in the 1996 Distaff at Woodbine as the crowning achievement in Farnsworth’s Eclipse Award reign, which also included victories by Mecke in the Arlington Million Stakes (G1) and Early Times Turf Classic Stakes (G1).

In 1999, Mecke’s full sister, Beautiful Pleasure, capped her championship season with a third Grade 1 victory in the Distaff at Gulfstream Park.

Sherman’s father, Isidore, founded Farnsworth in 1961. Michael Sherman took over as president in 1962 and the farm was successful with its first stallion, Bollinas Boy, who led the nation in winners in 1969, 1972, and 1973. Farnsworth later stood Baldski, who sired 49 stakes winners in 14 crops, and Fortunate Prospect, the sire of 30 stakes winners in 18 crops.

Sherman is a member of the Calder Race Course Hall of Fame and was Florida’s Breeder of the Year in 1994 and 1995.
