Mayor, city leaders support Arlington’s gaming push

Arlington Heights Mayor Arlene Mulder and the village trustees have thrown their support behind Arlington Park’s drive for slot machines.

Mulder said at a meeting of the Village Board that action was necessary to “preserve the viability of Thoroughbred racing in Illinois and in Arlington Heights.”

During an informal discussion by trustees at the meeting, only one was opposed.

The Chicago Tribune reports that Mulder plans to “draft a letter summarizing the village trustees’ stances, which ranged from lukewarm to enthusiastic.”

A gambling expansion bill calling for five new Illinois casinos and slots at the state’s Thoroughbred and Standardbred tracks passed the state Senate in December and was approved by committee in the House of Representatives. But the House sponsor, Representative Lou Lang (D-Skokie), deciding against asking that the bill be called for a vote on January 11, the night the veto session adjourned, even though gave assurances to track owners and leaders of horsemen’s groups that afternoon.

As a consequence, any new gambling expansion legislation must start from scratch at the ongoing spring session of the legislature.

Downtown Chicago was the site of one of the five new casinos in the earlier bill that passed the Senate, and the city’s new mayor, Rahm Emanuel, is likely to support a similar bill. Not only is Emanuel inheriting major financial problems, Arlington Park Chairman Richard Duchossois reportedly made a significant contribution to his election campaign.
