Richard Duchossois, chairman of Arlington Park and a director of Churchill Downs Inc., will receive the Ellen and Herbert Moelis Equine Savior Award for Philanthropy at the tenth annual Equine Advocates annual awards dinner and charity auction on August 4 in Saratoga Springs, New York.

Duchossois has been a major advocate against horse slaughter.

“In 2006 Mr. Duchossois persuaded former House Speaker Dennis Hastert to allow the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act to come to the House floor for a vote,” said Equine Advocates President Susan Wagner. That was historic. Sadly, the bill was blocked in the Senate and did not become law, but members of Congress, as well as tens of millions of Americans became aware of the horse slaughter issue as a result of what he did.”

Actress and 2009 honoree, Bebe Neuwirth, will present Duchossois with the award.

“Equine Advocates knows and understands the real value of racehorses to the world and understands the inhumane slaughter must be prevented,” Duchossois said. “I am very honored and privileged to be recognized by such a worthwhile organization and I salute Ellen and Herbert Moelis for their contributions to this great program.”

Actress Bo Derek will present an award to Racing Hall of Fame jockey Kent Desormeaux recognizing efforts to prevent injury and save horses’ lives.

The gala will take place in the new state-of-the-art wing of the Saratoga City Center on Broadway. General tickets are $250 per person. Tickets at front tier tables are $500.

Sadly, there is no law banning horse slaughter nationwide, only in the states of Illinois and Texas and many are trying to start, altho not aware of current efforts. We have been working for many yrs to get the national law for banning. Any help by talking to congress and Senators is appreciated. Also efforts to stop wild mustang round-ups have not been enough to stop the BLM fr flaunting their powers to continue and now ,more live in holding pens in other states than in the wild with their families. It is a disaster. But the recognition of people like Dick D helps.

hONOR THIS MAN FOR TRYING.Horse slaughter is a horrible death for a noble friend. They have passed a law banning it in USA.(MT is bringing it back, quitely)The KILL PLANTS just moved across borders to Mexico and Canada. They report their profits are greater, HUGE, now. They dont have to conform to the USDA laws and use cheaper labor. The long 'ride' to these plants are inhumane. No feed, no water, often trampled and injured. Horse rescues are full. The average cost to euthenize a horse is $300 and $300 to dispose of body. Some owners starve or dump their horses do to the economy and stupidity. Our National Treasures, the mustanges suffer even with gov't obsevations. Lets all REALLY open our eyes. What is the ANSWER?

These people deserve honoring however, just try to place a horse in a rescue and see if you can. They are over loaded with insufficient financial support. Get real, it is not as wonderful as you think.
