Jockey Michael Baze, 24, was found dead in his vehicle in the stable area on Tuesday at Churchill Downs.

Baze is the son of former jockey Mike Baze, who rode primarily in the Northwest. He is the cousin of Tyler Baze, winner of the 2000 Eclipse Award as outstanding apprentice jockey; and the second cousin of Russell Baze, the all-time leading jockey by wins with more than 11,500 victories.

Baze’s jockey agent, Bobby Kelly, exchanged text messages with the jockey at 9 p.m. EDT on Monday, the same day he picked up the rider’s book. Kelly tried to call and text Baze on Tuesday morning but did not get a reply.

“It’s a tough situation for his mom and all, only 24 years old,” Kelly said. “I feel sorry for them.”

Louisville Metro Police spokeswoman Alicia Smiley said the body of an unidentified male was found in a vehicle at 4:30 p.m. outside Gate 5 of Churchill Downs. Foul play is not suspected, she said, and police are treating the situation as a death investigation.

Churchill Downs released a statement via its Twitter account shortly before 9 p.m. that said Jefferson County Deputy Coroner Jim Wesley confirmed that the body found at Churchill Downs was that of Michael Baze.

Michael Baze won riding titles at Hollywood Park and Del Mar in 2007 and the 2010 Arlington Park title. He won 918 races, including 53 stakes and 20 graded stakes. His last stakes win came aboard It Happened Again in the Razorback Handicap (G3) on March 12 at Oaklawn Park. Michael Baze’s biggest career win came aboard Mi Sueno in the 2009 Darley Debutante Stakes (G1).

Michael Baze took out his jockey’s license in 2003.

Iam sure drugs played a roll in this, i remember when chris antley died and the two seemm to have the same causes, and i dont need to tell you that when they start looking in the blood then its a sure case of drugs being the cause most riders are on somthing and this is sure to cast anothe dark light on our sport

Racing has lost another member way too early. A tragic loss. Our heartfelt condolences go out to Michael's family and friends.
