Multiple Grade 1 winner Devil May Care died on Wednesday, a year to the day that she drew post position 11 for the 2010 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1).

A multiple Grade 1 winner by Malibu Moon, Devil May Care was euthanized after Johanna Reimer, V.M.D., of Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital confirmed she had lymphosarcoma, a cancer of the lymph tissue.

Devil May Care won five of nine starts and bankrolled $724,000 in two seasons for owner John W. Greathouse’s Glencrest Farm and trainer Todd Pletcher.

“To all who have followed and been a part of Devil May Care’s racing life and her fight for life, she and I wish to thank and applaud all of you,” Greathouse said in a press release in which he referred to her “our shining star.”

Greathouse purchased Devil May Care for $110,000 at the 2008 Keeneland September yearling sale.

A half sister to multiple grade/group stakes winner Regal Ransom, Devil May Care was produced by the Red Ransom mare Kelli’s Ransom. Diamond A Racing Corp. bred Devil May Care in Kentucky.

“The racing was a thrill and one not to be forgotten or dismissed out of hand. To this day I don’t believe we ever saw her best race,” Greathouse continued. “But that is my opinion and will be saved for my memories. To those who cared for her and her health, we both thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

“We tried very hard, only to be overcome by lymphosarcoma, an enemy that we couldn’t beat. We entered a race we couldn’t win.”

Peace to you, beautiful Devil May Care.
You will always be a beauty and a wonder in our hearts.
Watch the Derby with Barbaro and Eight Belles, and keep all the pretty little horses safe.

I will miss you, sweet girl. You were one of my favorites last year and I am very saddened by your premature death. The racing world lost a star filly. Rest in peace.
