British Columbia racing luminary McAfee dies

Posted: Wednesday, May 04, 2011 10:46 AM

Bryant McAfee, a 2008 inductee into the British Columbia Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame, died on Monday in Vancouver.

McAfee was the longest serving executive of the Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association of British Columbia. He was also well known for his work counseling those within the horse industry with drug and alcohol problems.

His substance abuse program based at Hastings Race Course evolved into the Winners Foundation, which operates throughout North America. McAfee’s efforts landed him the first-ever Industry Service Award from the North American body of the HBPA.

“He was one of the finest gentlemen I have met in the industry,” said Raj Mutti, regional general manager of BC Racing. “His word was golden anytime we talked business.”

Owner, trainer, and HPBA of BC director David Milburn said, “Bryant absolutely changed a lot of people’s lives, I mean a lot of people. He made the male populace at Hastings better husbands, better fathers and better employees. And he did it quietly.”

McAfee is survived by wife Ethel, three children, and two grandchildren.
