Longtime Maryland politician Schaefer dies

William Donald Schaefer, a four-term mayor of Baltimore who then served two terms as Maryland’s governor and namesake of a graded stakes race annually run on the Preakness Stakes (G1) undercard, died on Monday in Catonsville, Maryland.

“New York had its Fiorello H. La Guardia; Chicago had its Daleys. And Baltimore had William Donald Schaefer,” Robert D. McFadden wrote in the New York Times. “The name on park benches, garbage trucks, office buildings, construction sites, horse races at Pimlico [Race Course], and on the psyche of Baltimoreans in the 1970s and ’80s. It was a kind of anticlimax when he became governor; they called him the mayor of Maryland.”

So beloved was Schaefer as a figure that the Maryland Jockey Club scrapped its Pimlico Special Handicap while retaining the William Donald Schaefer Handicap for older horses on the Preakness Stakes undercard in recent years. The Schaefer, run as a Grade 3 race last year, marked the seasonable debut of eventual Horse of the Year and Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) winner Blame.

Schaeffer was a four-term city councilman before becoming mayor in 1971, and he was governor 1987-1995 before retiring only to take up politics again and become state comptroller from 1999-2007.
