Half-dozen horses die in Interstate trailer fire

Posted: Tuesday, April 19, 2011 11:42 AM

Investigators are blaming a tossed cigarette from a passing driver as the cause of a horse trailer fire that killed six juvenile Thoroughbreds on the evening of April 15.

The New York Daily News and WRAL-TV in North Carolina report that the horses were trapped after hay ignited while they were being shipped on I-95 in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. The Thoroughbreds were being shipped from Ocala to Belmont Park.

The Daily News reports that some of the trainers to receive the horses included Mike Hushion, Rudy Rodriguez, and Richard Schosberg.

The Daily News reports that the driver of the Loraine Course Transport tractor-trailer saw flames, pulled over, and she and her back-up driver attempted to fight the flames but it was too late to save the horses. One driver suffered minor injuries.

So tragic and sad! :( All because of a
careless, thoughtless act!

Thank you for the article. It is interesting to note that fires normally take a long time to smoulder before they ignite into flame, the horses might die of inhalation long before heat. Also - would like to see what DNA was on that cigarette - it is MUCH easier for a cigarette tossed by the driver to get in that trailer, instead of by another vehicle. Is the driver a smoker?

This is a horrible, criminal act and it should be illegal to toss a cigarette out a window. I agree cigarettes should cost $200. a pack. disgusting. Hope the truck drivers are ok. It must have been very traumatic and they tried their best. So sad.
