Keeneland to test mobile wagering platform this spring

Keeneland Race Course plans to unveil a wagering platform for smart phones at the upcoming spring meet.

On Wednesdays beginning April 13, the horse racing track will sign up 30 people to wager at the track through their Android or iPhone smart phones on FastBet mobile wagering. Keeneland’s vice president of technology, Brad Lovell, said the plan is to add another 30 people on the second Wednesday of the meet and that more days could be added if mobile wagering works well.

The wagers will be processed as on-track wagers, ensuring the track and horsemen top returns on betting handle. The mobile wagering was developed with United Tote, which handles Keeneland’s wagers.

“We want to nail down the functionality at this meet and then unveil it in full in the fall,” Lovell said.

Players will deposit money at the track on a FastBet card, which is like a debit card. Mobile wagers will be deducted from the card’s account and winnings will be added to it. At the end of the day, players can cash out the card account at the track.

The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission noted that it did not have to make a decision on the matter but found no problem with the mobile wagering.

At Wednesday’s racing commission meeting, Keeneland withdrew a proposal for fractional wagering but said it hopes to add such an option in the fall when it has had more time to work out some problems.

Fractional wagering allows the bettor to name an amount for an exotic wager and the bet then goes through in the fractional amount. For instance, a bettor with $5 available could say they would like to box three horses in an exacta and the six bets would be processed as 80-cent wagers on each combination, with 20 cents change returned to the bettor.
