Champion The Wicked North euthanized (includes video)

THE WICKED NORTH

Multiple Grade 1 winner The Wicked North, the 1994 Eclipse Award winner as champion older male, was euthanized on Thursday at the Hagyard Equine Medical Center in Lexington due to complications from an intestinal lipoma strangulation. He was 22.

The chestnut Far North horse out of the multiple stakes-winning Good Behaving mare Wicked Witchcraft, had been pensioned at Old Friends Thoroughbred retirement facility in Georgetown, Kentucky, since 2008.

“He was a great champion," Old Friends President Michael Blowen said. “He was fine last night but Kent Ralstin, our assistant farm manager, discovered his discomfort early this morning. The Wicked North had a ton of class, and it was all on display at the end.”

Trained by David Bernstein for owner Phil Hersh, the Wicked North won eight of 17 starts, including the Oaklawn Handicap (G1), Californian Stakes (G1), and San Antonio Handicap (G2), all in 1994, and earned $1,180,750 in four racing seasons.

He suffered a suspensory injury in the 1994 Hollywood Gold Cup (G1) and was retired. As a stallion, he stood in California, New York, and Kentucky until a near-fatal bout of equine protozoal myeloencephalitis (EPM) ended his stud career.

The Wicked North sired 57 winners, including two stakes winners, from 99 starters that earned $2,425,422 through Wednesday.

The Wicked North was one of the best Illinois Breds to race. I had not seen him since he was a baby at Sunrise Farm. He looked like the whole package when he was a baby, he turned out to be the whole package. He is what you look for when you bred one.
