Silver Goblin dies at 20

Posted: Thursday, March 10, 2011 3:57 PM

by John D. Ferguson

Multiple graded stakes winner Silver Goblin was found dead in the gelding’s pasture in Bache, Oklahoma on Monday. Silver Goblin died of apparent natural causes, owner Al Horton said.

The 20-year-old Silver Ghost gelding earned $1,083,895 in six seasons from 1993 to 1999. Silver Goblin had 26 career starts with 16 wins, four seconds, and three thirds. Bred in Oklahoma out of the Zonic mare Molly O’Horton, Silver Goblin posted wins in the 1995 Razorback (G2) and Essex (G3) Handicaps. He also won the Fairmount Derby (G3) and Omaha Gold Cup Stakes (G3) in 1994.

Horton’s horse ran mainly at Remington Park and Oaklawn Park, but also traveled to New York, Texas, Nebraska, Maryland, Colorado, and Illinois to compete.

The gray runner perhaps will be best remembered for finishing second to Cigar in the 1995 Oaklawn Handicap (G1).

After finishing eighth in the 1994 Preakness Stakes (G1), Silver Goblin went on an eight-race winning streak over the next nine months, a tear that included seven stakes wins. The streak at Oaklawn after Silver Goblin finished second, beaten 2 ½ lengths, to Cigar.

“It was a total surprise,“ said Horton of the death of his most successful runner. “We buried him where he died. We were fortunate to have him.”
