Former CTBA president Keith Card dies

Keith Card, former president of the California Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association and a member of the California Racing Hall of Fame, died on Tuesday. He was 83.

Card was the breeder of 2009 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint winner California Flag and 1990 California Cup Distaff Handicap winner Linda Card. He also campaigned 1993 Santa Monica Handicap (G1) winner Freedom Cry.

Card was elected CTBA president in 2005 after serving as vice president, secretary, and treasure. He also was responsible for rejuvenating the California Racing Hall of Fame seven years ago.

Card suffered a stroke about three years ago.

“As we all know, Keith has been struggling with various health issues for some time now,” said Doug Burge, CTBA executive vice president and general manager. “He was excited and elated at the annual meeting, when he received the great honor of being inducted into the Hall of Fame. That excitement kept a smile on his face for two solid days afterward.”
