MacBeth Fund executive director DeFranco dies

Tony DeFranco, executive director of the Don MacBeth Memorial Jockey fund, died on February 19 in Woodland Hills, California following a long illness. He was 70.

The MacBeth fund, started by comedian Tim Conway and Judy McCarron, has raised and distributed more than $3-million to more than 2,500 injured jockeys and exercise riders.

“Tony was the guy who fielded all the requests for assistance and he was also the guy who organized all our fundraisers such as the Jockeys Across America event, the jockey dinner at the Pamplemousse Grill, and the team penning competitions,” said Chris McCarron, MacBeth Fund vice president. “He worked closely with thousands of jockeys and racetrack personnel through the years and he will be greatly missed. The sport of racing and more specifically jockeys, were much better off because of the work Tony did.”

DeFranco had been with the MacBeth fund since 1987.

A memorial Mass is planned for 11 a.m. PST on March 5 at St. Bernardine’s Catholic Church in Woodland Hills.

Two corrections on this article...

The memorial is March 5th at 11am at St Bernardine's Chrch in Woodland Hills

Tony passed away February 19th.
