Gambling expansion revived in Illinois legislature

Illinois state Sen. Terry Link (D-Lake Bluff) has revived and slightly revamped his gambling expansion bill to bring slot machines to the state’s Thoroughbred and harness racetracks and permit five new casinos to be built.

A similar bill authored by Rep. Lou Lang (D-Skokie) passed the Senate in December and was approved by the House Executive Committee in early January but it died when Lang, the House sponsor, decided not to call it for a vote on the final night of the veto session.

Now, Sen. Link is looking to speed his new bill out of committee to the Senate floor and find a new sponsor in the House.

“We’ll be moving on this very quickly,” he said. “We’ve talked to a lot of people. We’ve spoken to the new members of the legislature. I think they will be quite interested.

“It’s pretty much the same bill (as the one the Senate passed in December). We’re tweaking it to try to get more of a consensus. We’ll try to work with the (ten) existing casinos and make sure we can answer some of their problems and get them on board this time.

“I think you’ll be seeing this bill on the governor’s desk in late March or early April.”
