Nominations sought for fifth annual Dr. Tony Ryan Book Award
Posted: Monday, January 24, 2011 12:38 PM

Castleton Lyons and Thoroughbred Times will co-sponsor the Fifth Annual Dr. Tony Ryan Book Award, presented to the author of the best book about Thoroughbred racing published in 2010.
The award comes with a $10,000 cash prize—making it one of the richest book awards in the world—and the nomination process now is open for publishers wishing to have their books considered for the prestigious award.
“One lustrum later, the Dr. Tony Ryan Book Award continues to go from strength to strength,” said Castleton Lyons President Shane Ryan, whose father founded the award in 2006. “The quality of the winners to date has been exceptional and, therefore, we look forward to reviewing all the submissions for the 2010 award. This accolade recognizes great writing and helps promote the sport we love, a visionary gesture from a book and racing fan, my father.
Named for the late founder of Castleton Lyons who conceived the award in 2006 to reward literary excellence, the Dr. Tony Ryan Book Award is presented annually to the author of the best book published about an aspect of Thoroughbred racing.
“We are pleased to once again sponsor this prestigious award with Castleton Lyons,” said Mark Simon, president of the Lexington-based publication company Thoroughbred Times. “This award is unique in racing in that it is the only one that recognizes authors of books. This is their Eclipse Award competition, so to speak.”
The deadline for submissions for the 2010 Dr. Tony Ryan Book Award is February 25, 2011. The finalists will be named in March.
The announcement of the winner of the 2010 Book Award will be made on April 13 at a reception at Castleton Lyons in Lexington. The winner also receives a Tipperary Crystal trophy. The runners-up will also each receive a Tipperary Crystal trophy and a check for $1,000.
Nominees for the Book Award can be in any category: fiction, non-fiction, handicapping, training, children’s, health care, photography, etc., as long as it pertains to an aspect dealing with Thoroughbreds. Judges selected by Thoroughbred Times will critique books on content, plus design, layout, and artwork, when relevant, to select the 2010 winner.
To submit nominees to the Dr. Tony Ryan Book Award, authors or publishing companies should send six (6) copies of the book, along with the nomination form, to: Book Award, Thoroughbred Times, 2008 Mercer Rd, Lexington, KY 40511. Entries must be received by February 25, 2011.
The 2009 Dr. Tony Ryan Award winner was James E. “Ted” Bassett and Bill Mooney for the biography Keeneland’s Ted Bassett: My Life. The other finalists for 2009 were Lynn Reardon for Beyond the Homestretch—What I’ve Learned from Saving Racehorses, and Andrew Plattner for The Kentucky Derby Vault: A History of the Run for the Roses.

Lord of Misrule, great read. Like reading a Marilynne Robinson book of the race track. Read it with a dictionary. Loved it!
