California board suspends Mute Rudulph owner over silks

An ongoing investigation into a California controversy involving jockey silks of questionable taste has finally been concluded.

The Sacramento Bee reported that horse owner Bill Wilbur has been suspended for four months, which will cost him about $1,500.

In an agreement reached with California Horse Racing Board stewards this month, Wilbur will let his license expire February 28 and will not reapply until after July 1.

The silks in question resembled a Confederate flag and were worn by the jockey of a then two-year-old colt named Mute Rudulph in a $12,500 maiden claiming race at the Cal Expo state fair in Sacramento on July 15.

Wilbur chose the name of the horse because he is not a fan of TVG on-air host Ken Rudulph, a native of Sacramento who is African-American.

TVG executive producer Tony Allevato complained to the California Horse Racing Board about the silks worn by jockey Michael Martinez aboard Mute Rudulph in that July 15 race.

Wilbur’s attorney, Pat McCarthy, claimed at the time that a decision by Wilbur to change the color of the silks was not racially motivated.

“There was never any intention to connect the silks with the horse or the namesake of the horse,” he said.  “Bill is a big supporter of the [NBA’s] Sacramento Kings and his colors were always the same as the team colors – black, white, and purple. After he and his wife Karen separated, Bill wanted to get new colors. He liked the silks used by his friend Jim Robinson and got permission to get something similar.”

Wilbur ordered the new silks from Stephanie Searle, who owns Classic Silks based at Golden Gate Fields in Albany, California. “There was no mention ever made by Bill about a Confederate flag,” Searle said.

There is zero chance the choice of colors was an attempt to make his dislike for Ken Rudolph a racially motivated statement. Heck he's not that clever. Not by a longshot..
