Polish Navy euthanized at Old Friends at 27

Grade 1 winner and sire Polish Navy was euthanized on Thursday at Old Friends Thoroughbred Retirement facility in Georgetown, Kentucky, after suffering from complications from a hip injury. He was 27.

The Danzig stallion out of the *Tatan mare Navsup had been pensioned at Old Friends since 2009.

“Polish Navy injured his hip several weeks ago and was taken to Hagyard’s where he received excellent diagnostic care,” Old Friends President Michael Blowen said. “Unfortunately, he just never recovered.

“Dr. Doug Byars visited with this great old horse several times and, in consultation with Old Friends, advised us that Polish Navy’s time had come.”
 
Trained by Racing Hall of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey for Ogden Phipps, Polish Navy won seven of 12 starts, including the 1986 Champagne (G1) and Cowdin (G1) Stakes and the 1987 Woodward Stakes (G1), and earned $1,118,076 in two seasons of racing.

Polish Navy began his stud career at Claiborne Farm and, after several years in Japan and one in Australia, returned to spend the last six years of his stud career at Wayfare Farm in Kentucky. As a sire, he is best remembered for 1993 Kentucky Derby (G1) and Travers Stakes (G1) winner Sea Hero. From 19 crops, Polish Navy sired 250 winners from 450 starters, including ten graded stakes winners, who earned $32,350,196.
 
A memorial service is planned for the spring at Old Friends.
