American TURF Monthly Editor Rowe passes

Howard Rowe, the former editor in chief of American TURF Monthly who helped establish a library for New York Racing Association stable area employees, died Wednesday at Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow, New York, near his home in Hempstead.

Rowe, 97, was close friends with Racing Hall of Fame trainer H. Allen Jerkens, and it was with Jerkens’s wife, Elizabeth, that Rowe helped establish the stable area library. Rowe’s family has asked that donations in his name be made to the Belmont Park Backstretch Assistance Fund.

“This great racing journalist will be sadly missed by all,” said Joseph Conte, who worked with Rowe on American TURF Monthly.

Rowe’s late brother, Robert Rowe, founded Racing Research Institute, an agency that helped in the launch of Bloodstock Research Information Systems. Rowe is survived by a daughter, Lorraine Queeney of Huntsville, Alabama.
