The Thoroughbred Club of America will welcome Arlington Park Chairman Richard Duchossois as its honor guest at its annual testimonial dinner later this year at Keeneland Race Course.

Duchossois, 88, is the founder and chairman of Duchossois Group Inc., which acquired Arlington Park in suburban Chicago in 1983. Arlington merged with Churchill Downs Inc. in 2000, and Duchossois Group is the leading shareholder of the Louisville-based gaming company.

Duchossois lives in Barrington Hills, Illinois, with his wife, Judy. He is the first honor guest to reside outside of Kentucky since Dogwood Stable President and South Carolina resident Cot Campbell in 2004.

“We see this as a lifetime achievement-type honor,” said TCA Vice President Julia Offutt Cauthen. “We’re always mindful that this is not a local award but an international award.”

The TCA solicits nominations from its members each year regarding potential honorees. The organization’s bylaws charge the board of directors “to honor a person…for rendering outstanding service to or contributing toward the betterment of Thoroughbred racing and/or breeding.”

The list of luminaries Duchossois will join on the TCA’s roster of honor guests includes last year’s winner Catesby Woodford Clay and other racetrack executives such as Jack Robbins, D.V.M., Howard Battle, and Ted Bassett. Leading breeder and former Churchill Chairman William S. Farish was the honor guest of 2006.

The honor guest award will be the next in a long list of accolades Duchossois and his racetrack have received. In 1985, Arlington became the first track to receive an Eclipse Award—recognition received for having staged the “Miracle Million” just 25 days after the grandstand destroyed by fire. Two more Eclipse Awards would follow: the next in 1987 for television coverage related to its stakes races and another ’89 for investments in racing when Duchossois spearheaded legislation that allowed him to rebuild Arlington.

Duchossois received the 2003 Eclipse Award of Merit for his contributions to Thoroughbred racing, and the National Turf Writers Association honored him with the Joe Palmer Award for meritorious service to racing during the ‘02 Breeders’ Cup week at Arlington. He also received the Jockey Club Gold Medal in 1986.
