Jockey Cuthbertson dead at 63

Posted: Tuesday, September 07, 2010 3:54 PM

Jockey Alan Cuthbertson, who rode in Canada for five decades, died on Monday. He was 63.

Cuthbertson made his apprentice riding debut at Fort Erie in 1964. Known for his ability to coax extra effort out of his mounts and his restraint to put the whip away when they were beaten, Cuthbertson, known to friends and family as “Ace,” rode through 2009.

Riding at Assiniboia Downs for the past few years, Cuthbertson set a record for a jockey in Western Canada with 109 wins in 2008.

Jockey Club records, which go back only to 1976, credit Cuthbertson with 1,339 wins and earnings of $10,515,227.

Alan was a good man, and a great rider. I got the pleasure to not only watch him ride, but to meet him several times and hang out. I know he loved his family, and he loved to ride, and he always had fun. I know he is sitting in the winners circle.
