Stauffer to call races for Oak Tree at Hollywood meeting

Posted: Monday, September 06, 2010 10:42 PM

by Ed DeRosa

Vic Stauffer will call the races at Oak Tree Racing Association’s fall meeting at Hollywood Park, an Oak Tree official confirmed Monday night.

Stauffer is the normal announcer for both the spring-summer and fall meetings held at Hollywood Park each year.

Trevor Denman, who normally calls the races at the winter-spring meeting at Santa Anita Park as well as at both Del Mar Thoroughbred Club and Fairplex Park, had called the races for Oak Tree when that association’s annual fall meeting had been held at Santa Anita.

The California Horse Racing Board would not approve Oak Tree’s application to stage its 2010 fall meeting at Santa Antia because of concerns over the synthetic Pro-Ride surface there, so it reached an agreement with Hollywood for the 2010 meeting before also committing to that facility for ’11 as well.

Vic is a fine caller and has a nice touch of ad-lib--"and here at Hollywood Park, free beer [pause], goes into the gate eight"...Trevor is okay, but calls a race the way he thinks it might turn out:ie: "and Zenyatta is last, 17 lengths from the front"..well what about the front ?.
Larry Lederman is the best for being candid. "and in the backstretch, so and so , and why isn't the pond frozen ? it's 30 degrees"---"so and so is coming and so is Easter" And until TVG, HRTV and a few National races, no one ever listened to an announcer.

What a shame that in a time when racing really needs moral and upstanding individuals that we have be subjected to more Vic Stauffer. In my opinion ( and yes I do know the man) his mere presence is a black eye for racing. When will these tracks wake up! Just my personal opinion.

This sucks. Stauffer sounds lame when he calls the races and always stutters in almost every race. Now, Trevor is legit he is the voice of horse racing. Fire Vic already that guy is trash at calling the races.

Happy Vic will be calling the races! His love for horse racing is evident in his calls. Sure he makes mistakes at times, but how many times has Trevor failed to see a horse, or mispronoucced a horse's name, or thought a horse was moving when he wasn't? Give Vic a break!

If that is the decision, I will only hope that Vic Stauffer will concentrate on the horses in the race and stop calling what Rafael Bejarano is doing in a race.
