Owner Tom Braly died at his home in Palm Desert, California, on Friday after a long battle with cancer. He was 72.
Braly got an emotional lift this season in his fight against the disease by the emergence of Evening Jewel as one of the leading three-year-old fillies in the nation.
Braly and his wife, Marilyn, were at Del Mar on August 21 to see Evening Jewel win the Del Mar Oaks (G1) on turf in her last start.
“Heart and energy, my golly!” Braly said after that win. “Everybody ganged up on her. She’s a horse for the ages.”
A multiple graded-stakes winner on turf and synthetic surfaces, Evening Jewel also captured the Ashland Stakes (G1) at Keeneland Race Course in April.
Braly, a native of Long Beach, California, majored in journalism at the University of Southern California and worked for the now defunct Los Angeles Mirror before shifting careers to insurance.
