Hollendorfer assistant found slain in California

GALEN MAY WITH EYE OF THE TIGER

Galen May, an assistant to Jerry Hollendorfer who accompanied Blind Luck to Louisville ahead of her Kentucky Oaks (G1) win, was found dead in his Antelope, California, apartment on August 28, and authorities have ruled his death a homicide.

May, 69, and Hollendorfer met in Northern California where May worked in the receiving barns at Golden Gate Fields and Bay Meadows. When May retired in 2003, Hollendorfer hired him as his top lieutenant when his horses traveled East.

In addition to being with Blind Luck this year, May traveled with Kentucky Derby (G1) starters Cause to Believe, Chocolate Candy, and Eye of the Tiger as well as top stakes performers Bwana Charlie and Hystericalady.

“We always had a good time and a few laughs,” Hollendorfer said of May. “No matter where we went—Chicago, New York, New Jersey, or Arkansas—Galen always had friends. He was a real good caretaker, and our owners all loved him. We always felt secure with him there. He was a good guy, and it is a shame he is not with us any more. I hope people will remember him for the good guy he was.”

Galen was a great guy. Wonderful sense of humor. I shared many a joke with Galen over the years. He was a Receiving Barn fixture in Northern California for decades. Whoever murdered him must have caught him by surprise or the scenario was totally unexpected for Galen, because he would have whooped his butt if he had a smell of foul play.. Rest in peace my friend.
