Williams to run for Kentucky governor

Posted: Wednesday, September 01, 2010 12:45 PM

by Frank Angst

Kentucky Senate President David Williams (R-Burkesville), who has opposed legislation that would have allowed added gaming at state racetracks, will run for governor in 2011.

Williams has filed to run for governor and current Agriculture Commissioner Richie Farmer will be his running mate.

Last year Williams rallied Republican Senators to block a House Bill that had approved video lottery terminals for Kentucky tracks. Williams sent the bill to a Republican-dominated committee where it failed to advance.

Current Gov. Steve Beshear, a Democrat, is running for a second term with Louisville Mayor Jerry Abramson. Beshear supported the VLT legislation.

In the release announcing his plans to run for governor, Williams talked about the need to change inaction in Frankfort.

“Kentucky is adrift. We need strong leadership to move this state forward,” Williams said. “We cannot afford another four years of inaction on the serious problems facing our Commonwealth.”

The proposition that David Williams could become governor terrifies me! He is a power hungry dictator who is only interested in promoting his own agenda. He doesn't care about the state of Kentucky or its people. I plan to campaign vehemently against him!

Kentucky needs a person that cares about the biggest and historical important issue on this years ballot. The welfare of the horse business in Kentucky! This guy could care less about the fact that Kentucky is losing it's horse population and it's history. Please do not let this guy have a say.

I'm not a KY resident, but I am a Republican and I'd like to know what this would-be Governor plans to do to bolster the largest industry in his state, before it goes down the tubes? If he's got a better idea than VLTs, he better get it out there in a hurry and make it good!

Warning to the people who think nothing can kill the horse business in KY because it's so integral to the fabric of the state - think Detroit and Michigan. The heart of the industry needs help. Williams better have a helluva plan if he wants to win.
