Overnight ratings drop for Preakness

NBC Sports' broadcast of the Preakness Stakes (G1) on Saturday drew a 6.4 overnight rating and a 15 share, which is the percentage of television sets in use that are tuned to a specific program.

The 6.4 overnight rating is a decline of 19% from last year, when the broadcast of filly Rachel Alexandra’s victory over Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) winner Mine That Bird drew a 7.9 rating and an 18 share. Last year’s overnight ratings were the best since the 9.2 rating for the 2004 Preakness, won by Smarty Jones, and the second highest in 19 years.

This year’s overnight ratings are up from the 2008 Preakness, when Derby winner Big Brown’s victory drew a 6.2 rating and 14 share, and on par with the 2007 edition won by Curlin, which drew a 6.4 rating and a 15 share.

The thing that is MOST alarming is this: average per capita handle on a day like the Preakness is about $300.00. Pimlico attracted 18,000 "new fans" with a $20 all the beer you can drink ploy, but on average, they bet ZERO dollars as the handle for the day took a sharp hit from last year. 18,000 new fans should have generated $5.4 million in new handle.
Got their Preak on? Really?

I do not thnk NBC did a very good job advertising the Preakness. I was looking for it and could not find it. I also think that horseracing is not Bob Costas' strong suit.... his disinterest and lack of knowledge is very evident. The pre race coverage was weak and could not keep this hard studying horse racing fan interested. I cannot imagine this coverage doing anything to attract new viewers. We are not always going to have a filly run the Preakness to attract viewers, but there were plenty of other stories to follow or even segments to teach new viewers what to look for in a race horse for this race, etc.
