The $1-million Haskell Invitational Stakes (G1) on August 1 at Monmouth Park will be televised live on ABC.

It will be the first time the 1 1/8-mile race for three-year-olds will be broadcast live to a national audience on network television.

“This is a terrific opportunity to grow the Haskell on a national stage,” said Bill Knauf, Monmouth Park assistant vice president and general manager. “Airing the Haskell on ABC will ensure a greater audience to showcase North America’s richest invitational race, and historic Monmouth Park as well.”

In addition to the Haskell, ABC also will televise the $200,000 Oceanport Stakes (G3) during the broadcast, which will run from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. EDT.

Monmouth Park’s 50-day summer meeting opens on May 22.

I think it's wonderful. Racing fans can watch it on T.V. and I'm sure many more fans will be attracted to horseracing because of it. Go AFLEET AGAIN

It's a great way to get more publicity for Monmouth Park, and the race itself has alwats attracted the top 3.y.o so all in all it's good for racing and Monmouth Park.

Great. Now all Monmouth has to do is actually include well funded classic distance races [1 1/4] for older horses, at least one for the boys and one for the gals, and we'll be talkin' turkey. Its astounding that the Mth. stakes schedule is awash with $100,000 overnights, but the biggest offerings for the elite of the elite is the $300,000 G3 Islin and the $300,000 G2 Molly Pitcher (and that at a mile-and-a-sixteenth).
How this for a handicap series proposal?
Salvator Mile - $350,000 Iselin - $500,000 Monmouth 'Classic' [hey, sounds pretty good, huh?] One mile-and-a-quarter - $750,000.
For the gals - hmmmmm...well, jack the purse up for the Pitcher to $400,000, increase the distance to a mile-and-an-eighth, followed by a mile-and-a-quarter race a few weeks later with a purse of,oh, say $600,000? You would then potentially have 5 racing dates which would attract the best horseflesh in North America to Monmouth Park.
A well balanced stakes schedule at a MAJOR racetrack just cant be be Haskell, Haskell, Haskell, and the payback from such an investement would be enormous. Lets face it, the way things stand now, Monmouth can only really hope to attract the real top horseflesh to the shore is with the Haskell & the UN -twice a year.
Hey, boosting the Matchmaker & the Monmouth Oaks would be a big hit as well and would round things out to include three year old fillies and an offering for the top grass mares. What do you say, lets get this thing done!
