Youbet.com reports small loss in first quarter of 2010

Youbet.com Inc. reported handle of $115.7-million in the first quarter of 2010, a 6.7% decline from the first quarter of ’09.

Youbet.com Chief Executive David Goldberg said a 9.2% decrease in race dates, poor weather, and a weak U.S. economy contributed to the handle decrease. Goldberg pointed out that the industry as a whole suffered a 10.4% handle decrease over the same period.

Overall Youbet reported a net loss of $527,000 during the three-month period ending March 31. Last year Youbet reported net profit of $820,000 during the same period. The difference largely could be attributed to $1-million in professional and legal fees related to the company’s pending merger with Churchill Downs Inc.

Youbet.com shareholders have approved the transaction, which is still being reviewed by the U.S. Department of Justice. The merger is expected to close during the second quarter of 2010.

Youbet.com reported $6.1-million handle on the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) and a Derby-Kentucky Oaks (G1) two-day handle of $8.6-million, both company records.

Youbet.com’s tote service, Untied Tote, reported a net loss of $1,263,000 in the quarter, 3.5% worse than last year.
