Evansville-based trainer charged with animal cruelty

Thoroughbred owner and trainer Steven Duncan was arrested Tuesday and charged with 13 counts of animal cruelty for neglected horses in Evansville, Indiana.

The Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Department said 18 horses were found standing in “several feet of their own manure,” according to the Evansville Courier-Press.

Duncan, 54, was released on bail on Tuesday night. He has not started a horse in 2010. In 2009, he had one starter, the mare Presidential Date, who was winless in ten races at Ellis Park, Indiana Downs, and Turfway Park.

The sheriff’s department took custody of the horses.

“Euthanasia was considered on one horse, but they decided to make an effort to try to save it,” Lieutenant Doug Daza told the Courier-Press. “There wasn’t much in the way of food for the animals except for alfalfa pellets.

“Our department has dealt with him before on similar issues but this is the worst case.”
