Fair Grounds cuts three stakes by $100,000 each

Citing poor weather and the struggling economy, Fair Grounds has decided to cut the purses of three of its stakes races from $400,000 to $300,000.

The track chose to reduce the purses of the Fair Grounds Oaks (G2), Mervin H. Muniz Jr. Memorial Handicap (G2) and New Orleans Handicap (G2) from $400,000 to $300,000.

“This move, painful as it is, ensures that we will not have to cut overnight purses for our final month of racing,” Fair Grounds General Manager Eric Halstrom said. “Looking at this from a long-term perspective, we have to get closer to a balanced purse account if we are to offer the highest possible purses for our horsemen next season.”

Halstrom is hoping for a strong finish to the meet, which is scheduled to include the season debut of Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra on Saturday, evening racing on March 19, and the Louisiana Derby (G2) card on March 27.
