In a move that could attract new fans and, more importantly, new Thoroughbred owners, Keeneland Association and Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia will begin a marketing relationship.

Keeneland Association President Nick Nicholson referenced the famous Disney-Super Bowl promotion in introducing the deal.

“Instead of going to Disney, when someone buys a million-dollar horse or wins a graded stakes at Keeneland they’ll get the chance to announce they’re going to the Greenbrier,” Nicholson said.

Nicholson said the track will work out arrangements to offer stays at the Greenbrier to stakes-winning owners or buyers of top Thoroughbreds.

Nicholson and Greenbrier owner Jim Justice announced the agreement on Wednesday at Keeneland. Justice said the Greenbrier plans to offer guests helicopter or plane flights to Keeneland Race Course for races.

“It takes about 28 minutes,” Justice noted, explaining that guests of the 232-year-old resort who enjoy tennis, golf, and other sporting activities seem like naturals for a day at the races. “I don’t think there’s an awareness of Keeneland with our guests but that’s going to change. … This is right in their wheelhouse of something they’d enjoy.”

In other cross-marketing promotions, Keeneland and Greenbrier will exchange artwork with Keeneland providing equine art for the hotel and the Greenbrier providing art from its historic 6,500 acres for display at the track. A special area at Keeneland will be reserved for Greenbrier guests, who will have the chance to wake at the resort, fly to the races, and return to the resort in the evening. Justice said he hopes such flights begin in time for the fall meet.

Keeneland Magazine will be offered in rooms at the Greenbrier. The Greenbrier plans to open a casino in July. Justice and Nicholson said packages likely would be arranged for bettors.

Nicholson hopes Greenbrier guests, who typically have financial means, enjoy a day at the races enough to consider Thoroughbred ownership.

“People at the Greenbrier enjoy life, enjoy a sporting life, and an active lifestyle. Those are the types of people who enjoy the sport of Thoroughbred racing,” Nicholson said.

Nicholson said the agreement seems like a natural.

“These are two neighbors doing what like-minded neighbors should do: Work together,” Nicholson said. Justice noted the two customer bases have similar interests.

Keeneland presented Justice with a painting of the paddock and a bronze sculpture of a horse and rider.
