Champion Two-Year-Old Filly: She Be Wild

In 2009, She Be Wild, a dark bay or brown Offlee Wild filly bred and owned by Nancy and Mike Mazzoni, earned champion two-year-old filly honors by winning four of five starts, including the Grey Goose Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1), after starting her career at Arlington Park.

That she developed into much of a racehorse at all was a bit of a surprise to her owners, who had tried to sell her as a two-year-old at public auction but basically got little or no interest, perhaps as much to do with her size—she is barely 15 hands—as her pedigree. No one at the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co. spring sale of two-year-olds in training could have known that her sire would become the leading freshman sire in North America by year end, and few could have envisioned this little filly would have such a nice turn foot and resolute will to win. But she did.

It would be nice to say the Mazzonis saw it coming, but that would be stretching the truth. Actually, they wanted to sell her because they planned to get out of the racing business. With their plans on being commercial breeders gone awry, they set their sights on exiting racing. Then fate intervened.

With She Be Wild still on their hands, the Mazzonis brought her home and began looking for a trainer, preferably from the Chicago area, where they had lived prior to moving to Lexington and starting Lost Creek Farm. Fortuitously, they bumped into Wayne Catalano at Keeneland Race Course and he took the filly.

“We’re really enjoying her right now,” Nancy Mazzoni said, “and we don’t plan to sell her. We’re having too much fun and you really get attached to horses you have raised.”

She Be Wild is in training at Gulfstream Park, and Mazzoni says their long-range goal for her this year is the Kentucky Oaks (G1).
