Champion Apprentice Jockey: Christian Santiago Reyes

Christian Santiago Reyes did not spend much time getting his feet wet when he decided to ride in the U.S. Instead, he dove right into the deep end.

Santiago Reyes spent his first season competing at Churchill Downs, Santa Anita Park, and Del Mar, and the 20-year-old proved he belonged as he amassed the most North American purse earnings of any apprentice jockey in 2009.

After he won his first career race on April 12 at Gulfstream Park aboard Chihulykee, Santiago Reyes moved to Churchill and won 12 races. He then shipped his tack west and won 24 races at Del Mar and 13 at the Oak Tree at Santa Anita meet, both tops for an apprentice.

For Santiago Reyes, going up against the likes of Garrett Gomez and Julien Leparoux daily is a challenge he relishes.

“He’s told me he wanted to ride with the better riders to be a better rider,” his agent, Tony Matos, said. “He wanted to be in the major leagues.”
