Greyhound racing ends in Wisconsin

Dairyland Greyhound Park, the Kenosha, Wisconsin, dog track that Chicago-area horse racing tracks viewed as a serious rival when it opened in 1990, closed for good on December 31 because of poor business.

Although there was a standing-room-only crowd in the clubhouse on closing night, meager crowds were the norm at Dairyland in the 21st century. The facility that cost $45-million to construct was unable to compete when Indian gaming came to Milwaukee, a half hour’s drive to the north.

According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Dairyland lost $3.4 million in 2008 and from $2.41 million to $2.84 million in the three preceding years.

A similar fate befell the state’s four other greyhound tracks that opened after voters legalized pari-mutuel betting and a state lottery in a 1987 referendum. Thoroughbred and Standardbred breeders and owners pushed hard for pari-mutuel betting but no one equine interests would invest in a horse track, leaving the state’s greyhound interests to believe mistakenly that their sport would reap a bonanza.

Arlington Park Chairman Richard Duchossois, who was the track’s sole owner at the time, was so concerned with the possibility of canine competition that he announced plans to rebuild his track that had been destroyed by fire in 1985 near the Wisconsin border, midway between Chicago and Milwaukee.

Plans called for the racetrack to be redeveloped into a business, cultural, recreational complex and a lavish and pastoral new facility to be constructed near the Illinois village of Old Mill Creek in September 1986.

However, Duchossois subsequently abandoned the idea and in 1988 and 1989 his state of the art track was built at its previous location in Arlington Heights.

In addition to Dairyland, another Wisconsin dog track, Geneva Lakes Greyhound Park, was constructed in close proximity to Arlington Park and opened in 1990. But, like Dairyland, Geneva Lakes never became a serious competitor and it went out of business on November 6, 1995 after losing approximately $3.5-million that year.

Both tracks became simulcasts outlets for Thoroughbred and Standardbred tracks during their existence but now the demise of Dairyland has ended off-track wagering in Wisconsin.
