Virginia House committee tables Instant Racing bill

The Virginia Thoroughbred industry might be feeling some déjà vu today after a House committee tabled a bill that would have allowed Instant Racing in the state.

It marks the third time the Virginia Senate has approved a bill to allow wagering on historical races, “Instant Racing,” only to see the legislation fail to advance in the House.

The bill would have allowed Instant Racing, which are machines that allow patrons to quickly wager on historical races, at Colonial Downs and off-track betting sites in the state. Revenue generated would have gone to the state’s transportation fund (42%), Colonial Downs (45%), and Thoroughbred and Standardbred purses (6%), and the state’s breeders’ fund.

The bill was considered on Thursday by the General Laws Subcommittee on ABC/Gaming. The Republican-controlled committee tabled the bill with a 5-2 vote.
