Giant Oak named Illinois horse of the year

Giant Oak, winner of the Arlington Classic Stakes, was named 2009 Illinois horse of the year and champion three-year-old male by the Illinois Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners Foundation.

The four-year-old Giant’s Causeway colt also finished second in both the Illinois Derby (G2) and Indiana Derby (G2) and a troubled fourth in the Clark Handicap Handicap Presented by Norton Healthcare (G2). Giant Oak won one of nine starts for trainer Chris Block in 2009 and earned $370,281.

Bred and owned by the Virginia H. Tara Trust, Giant Oak is out of the Crafty Prospector mare Crafty Oak, who was named broodmare of the year.

Dana Waier Thoroughbreds was named small breeder of the year, and Harvey and Nancy Vanier were named person of the year.

Stallion of the year went to Shore Breeze, a 12-year-old by Danzig. Shore Breeze stands for $3,000 at Eagle Valley Farm North in Peotone, Illinois.

The other divisional winners were (with sire in parenthesis): two-year-old male, Devient Behavior (Ecton Park); two-year-old filly, Sweet Lemon Chello (Lemon Drop Kid); three-year-old filly, Bow Tie Pasta (Champali); older male, Stonehouse (Chester House); older female, Copper State (Jump Start); turf male, Free Fighter (Out of Place); turf female, Cumulonimble (Stormy Atlantic); male sprinter, Mighty Rule (Gilded Time); female sprinter, Nicks (Salt Lake); claiming horse, Stumbling Block (Out of Place).
