San Luis Rey Downs may remain open

Reports of the demise of Southern California training center San Luis Rey Downs may be premature.

The California Thoroughbred Trainers received word on February 16 from Magna Entertainment Corp., which operates San Luis Rey Downs for parent company Magna International Developments that the facility would close on March 15.

But the management and horsemen at San Luis Rey Downs have been working with Magna officials on a business plan to keep the training center open.

“It is very important for facilities such as San Luis Rey Downs to stay open,” said Darrell Vienna, CTT vice president. “If we allow them to close, they close forever. Then when the need arises, what do we do?

“Let’s look at the reality. When Hollywood Park is torn down, what is the alternative? Where do the horses go?”

San Luis Rey Downs, located in Bonsall in northern San Diego County, has been an authorized training center since 1984.

Fairplex Park, located in Pomona and the host of an annual September meet during the Los Angeles County Fair, closed its year-round training and stable area last October.

Fairplex and San Luis Rey Downs took financial hits last year when stabling and transportation funds from Southern California Off-Track Wagering Inc. were reallocated and payments to those off-site stabling facilities ended.

Leigh Ann Howard, San Luis Rey Downs manager, said, “Right after that, Fairplex chose to close down. We chose to try and stay open. A lot of trainers live here–we have a strong community–and staying open is important to all of us.

"We are working with the land owners and have a business plan we believe will work. Keeping the facility alive until people have enough disposable income to once again afford to be race horse owners is our goal."

Marsha Naify, Thoroughbred Owners of California chairperson, said a decline in the horse population statewide has hurt off-site stabling facilities and the Southern California OTW reallocation resulted in a projected loss of about $1-million a year for San Luis Rey Downs.

“Magna can’t afford a loss like that,” Naify said.
