Auerbach, founder of E. A. Ranches, dies at 93

Ernest Auerbach, a longtime owner-breeder and master of one of California’s largest Thoroughbred farms, died on February 1 at his Pacific Palisades home. He was 93.

A Brooklyn native who made a fortune in real estate and land development in Southern California, Auerbach founded the 1,000-acre E. A. Ranches in Santa Ysabel in 1977. The farm stands stallions and has a five-furlong training track.

Auerbach’s first major runner was Lottery Winner, who won the 1993 Goodwood Handicap (G2) and three other stakes races. He bred and raced half siblings and graded stakes winners Belle’s Flag and Tres Paraiso and owned graded stakes winners Grab the Prize, Queen of Wilshire, and Star Cross (Arg).

Darrell Vienna was his main trainer for more than a decade.

“Ernie has an undying optimism, and a way of making you feel confident and that your decision is important to him,” Vienna said in 2001.
