Penn National plans gaming expansion at tracks

Despite poor results for the final quarter of 2009 and the year overall, Penn National Gaming plans to move forward on expanding gaming at its flagship track and Charles Town Races.

Penn National reported losses of $355.4-million in the fourth quarter and $378.6-million for the year but noted that it took significant steps in the final three months of 2009 to create long-term value. Besides being impacted by the poor economy, Penn National paid a $520.5-million pre-tax impairment charge in association with its original purchase of its casino in Lawrenceburg, Indiana.

In terms of its racetracks, the Wyomissing, Pennsylvania-based casino and track owner is looking to expand. At the Hollywood Casino, located at Penn National Race Course, the company plans to add 40 table games and 12 poker tables to the existing facility. Table games in the state were legalized in January.

At Charles Town Races, Penn National plans to add 85 table games, 27 poker tables, a steakhouse-lounge, and entertainment lounge. In a December local referendum, local voters approved the addition of table games at the track.
