CHRB hearing on Confederate flag silks delayed

Posted: Saturday, August 07, 2010 3:06 PM

by Larry Stewart

A stewards hearing in California dealing with jockey silks in the color of a Confederate flag was put off until August 26 because one of the two people accused of wrongdoing, silks custodian Tony Baze, was not represented by a lawyer.

Baze and Northern California horse owner Bill Wilbur became the subjects of a California Horse Racing Board investigation after Television Games Newtork Executive Producer Tony Allevato complained about the silks worn by the jockey of Mute Rudulph, which won a maiden claiming race July 15 at the California state fair in Sacramento.

The horse was named by Wilbur because he does not like TVG commentator Ken Rudulph’s on-air style.

The silks for Mute Rudulph had been black, white, and purple but for the July 15 race jockey Michael Martinez wore red silks highlighted by white stars on blue cross sashes. Baze is involved in the case because he did not report the color change to the clerk of the course.

Lawyer Pat McCarthy, representing Wilbur, said he told the stewards that since Baze is both a witness and an accused in the case, he should have legal representation. The stewards agreed and rescheduled the hearing, which will be held at Golden Gate Fields. Saturday’s hearing was held at Santa Rosa, the current site of the California fair circuit.

unfortunately, ken does not know much about horse racing, he has a poser entertainment LALA schitck. tries to entertain, but is not a horse player nor a handicapper. perhaps, he should go back to b movies or acting as a extra in b movies. what ever happened to hiring on substance and/or merit??

I think the owner of the horse, whom by the way is most always left out of the equation concerning their likes and/or dislikes, should have the opportunity to have his jockey wear whatever silks to the owner's liking!!
As for Ken, he's seems to be a nice guy, BUT HE DOES NOT UNDERSTAND THE HORSE INDUSTRY -- AT ALL!! I prefer other more savvy and educated horse handicappers.

Rudolph lost me as a fan several years ago when he on the air celebrated Malcolm X's birthday, I watch TVG for horse info, not to to hear homage to the man who proclaimed JFK's asssasination was a case of "chickens coming home to roost" TVG management would not critize Rudolph's remark when I queried them
