Kentucky horseman A. Carter Thornton, owner of Threave Main Stud in Paris, Kentucky, died on April 18. He was 92.
Thornton operated Threave Main Stud with his wife, Peggy, for 50 years before he handed the reins over to his daughter, Meg, and son, Tim.
An accomplished owner, breeder, and trainer, Thornton raced and trained homebred stakes winners Plumb Grey, Little Tudor, and Prim Lady.
Among the more than 100 stakes horses raised at the Bourbon County farm are 1982 Blue Grass Stakes (G1) winner and Preakness Stakes (G1) runner-up Linkage, multiple graded stakes winner Dance Spell, and six-time stakes winner Under the Rug for longtime client Christiana Stables.
Horses raised and/or sold by Thornton include Kentucky Derby winners Canonero II, Hoop, Jr., and Gallahadion.
Thornton served as president of the Kentucky Farm Managers’ Club, The Thoroughbred Club of America, and the Kentucky Division of the Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association. Thornton won the 2006 Hardboot Breeders Award, given by the Kentucky Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association and Kentucky Thoroughbred Association.
The family requests that donations be made to the Kentucky Racetrack Chaplaincy (KRTC), P.O. Box 324, Simpsonville, Kentucky, 40067.
