Jockey cards return to Keeneland

Posted: Thursday, April 15, 2010 1:04 PM

Keeneland Race Course will offer jockey cards for the first time in more than ten years.

The first series of the 2010 collectible cards is on sale now at the Keeneland gift shop. They also will be available at the Riders Up! Karaoke benefit on Friday, and individual cards will be given away on Saturday morning at the Breakfast with the Works program.

Jockeys will be available to sign the cards from 7-8:30 a.m. on Saturday.

“Racing needs to develop stars in various segments of the sport,” Jockey’s Guild national manager Terry Meyocks said. “We are hopeful these cards will be part of that effort. The jockeys want to do their part to help grow the industry.”

The first series consists of 61 cards, featuring Robby Albarado, Garrett Gomez, Julien Leparoux, and John Velazquez among many others. Included in the series are 14 special Racing Hall of Fame or Triple Crown winner cards, including riders such as Steve Cauthen, Pat Day, Angel Cordero, Jerry Bailey, and Ron Turcotte.

Each pack of cards features ten regular edition cards and one Hall of Fame card.

“Racing fans of all ages can enjoy the cards, whether they are sports-card collectors or kids using them to get autographs of their all-time favorite jockeys,” Meyocks said.

The cards are sponsored by Daily Racing Form.

Not fair. I live in Baltimore, MD. How do I get the cards? I have some of the early DRF cards. When the jockey's came to B'Mo I got them to sign them. Yo, Pete in Laurel, MD. You are correct sir the horses are the stars. Ya think I can get a hoof print if they create cards for horses?

KEE is my home track. E-mail me @ kevin.garland@uky.edu if you would like to send me money to purchase you some cards. I have a over 400 rating on eBay.

great idea but how about worn silks cards and saddlecloth cards where they put a small piece of material in the card like they do in other sports cards. also autograph cards of trainers and owners and such and personalities involved in the sport. make it a giant idea for topps or upperdeck or someone

Bad move, we don't follow Thoroughbred Racing because of the jockeys, and their personality's. They not the stars. It's the HORSES, It's the HORSES. Thats why these cards were a failure before and will be again.
