Jockeys' Guild President Meyocks
to run for Kentucky Senate

Terry Meyocks, the current president of the Jockeys’ Guild and a former executive with the New York Racing Association, has registered to run for the Kentucky Senate seat currently occupied by Alice Forgy Kerr (R-Lexington).

Meyocks will run as a Democrat, meaning he could face a primary in May that he would have to win before squaring off against Kerr in November General Election.

“She basically turned her back on the Thoroughbred industry,” Meyocks said of Kerr, who earlier this year voted against expanded gaming at racetracks in the commonwealth. “When you represent someone in Lexington, you have 100,000 jobs to protect. It’s a serious situation, and she put her own interests ahead of the interests of her constituents.”

Kerr, 55, has served as a senator since 1999.

Meyocks, 58, resigned as NYRA president six years ago amid allegations from then Attorney General Eliot Spitzer that Meyocks fostered an environment of corruption at the New York tracks. Spitzer went on to become governor but resigned after being linked to using the services of a high-end prostitution ring. Meyocks said that his negative experience with Spitzer emboldened him to seek public office.

“I want to do it the right way,” Meyocks said of politics. “This is about doing what’s best for the people of Lexington and Kentucky.”

Meyocks said that he began meeting with Jockeys' Guild members this summer about a possible Senate run and that he has the membership’s support. Meyocks and former Equibase Co. executive Phil O’Hara founded Meyocks & O’Hara Racing Enterprises, based in Nicholasville, Kentucky.
