TrackMaster challenges software developers

Posted: Wednesday, May 27, 2009 11:36 AM

TrackMaster has launched the Software Development Challenge with a goal of developing new handicapping software.

As part of the challenge, individuals who have developed personal handicapping software or are interested in further developing software will have the opportunity to fine tune and submit their ideas. Successful programs could be marketed in a deal with TrackMaster.

David Siegel said the challenge could attract people from outside of racing or could provide a push for people who have not completed racing software or web-based applications. TrackMaster will provide one year of sample data to allow participants to test their applications.

“We believe there are many people who have already developed a variety of programs to help analyze races, but who may not have put the ‘finishing touches’ on such applications to make them commercially acceptable,” TrackMaster President David Siegel said. “In addition, there are many statistically oriented people outside of racing who may simply have a fascination with predictive models. This contest gives these individuals an opportunity to apply their knowledge and interest for possible profit.”

Developers also will have an opportunity to collaborate.

In a blog, TrackMaster Senior Product Development Specialist Craig Walker outlined some possibilities for software and application ideas. He mentioned an “artificial intelligence” program that could learn over time based on results, a web-based program that would help a bettor target the best type of wager to exploit value, and a web-based application that handicappers could tailor to their wagering methods.

TrackMaster, a wholly owned subsidiary of Equibase Co., provides a range of handicapping products for Thoroughbred, Standardbred, and Quarter Horse racing. The contest will accept programs geared toward Thoroughbred or Standardbred racing.

Entries for the contest will be accepted through October 1. Final software programs will be due by May 1, 2010 with winners announced in mid-June 2010. For more information, click here.
