Real Sports takes another look at horse slaughter

HBO’s latest episode of “Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel” includes an updated segment on the Thoroughbred racing industry’s ties to slaughter. 

Correspondent Bernard Goldberg received a Sports Emmy for outstanding sports journalism for his initial report that aired last May on the sale of Thoroughbreds for slaughter.

In revisiting the issue, Goldberg focused on Philadelphia Park’s new Thoroughbred retirement facility Turning for Home in describing positive changes in the industry. 

Goldberg also mentioned policies that have been established by Magna Entertainment Corp., Churchill Downs Inc., Suffolk Downs, and other track operators forbidding the practice of horse slaughter.

“Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel” previously has critiqued Thoroughbred racing with stories on jockey health issues in 2002, on the Jockeys’ Guild in ‘06, and on drug use in ’07. 

The new episode debuts on Tuesday on HBO at 10 p.m. EDT/PDT and will air at various times through June 4 on both HBO and HBO2.
