Former jockey Valdes indicted by federal grand jury

Former jockey Ricardo A. Valdes was indicted on Wednesday by a federal grand jury in Detroit for his role in an alleged betting conspiracy involving races at Tampa Bay Downs.

A total of nine men were indicted – two Detroit area businessmen, six former University of Toledo athletes, and the ex-jockey. The college students were indicted for their alleged roles in a point-shaving scheme.

According to a story in USA Today, Valdes, Ghazi “Gary” Manni, and Edward Karam were indicted in connection with an alleged scheme to influence and profit on the outcome of races at Tampa Bay Downs and another track or tracks that were not named.

Prosecutors alleged that Manni and Karam paid jockeys for inside information and attempted to influence the outcome of races. Manni, Karam, and Valdes were charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud and sports bribery.

Valdes was one of seven jockeys suspended by Tampa in December of 2006 based on information provided by the Thoroughbred Racing Protective Bureau (TRPB). He has not ridden in a race since the suspension.

Tampa Bay Downs officials could not be reached for comment on Wednesday. TRPB President Frank Fabian is out of town this week, according to an administrative assistant with the TRPB.

Tampa also suspended Derek C. Bell, Jorge G. Bracho, Luis A. Castillo, Jose H. Delgado, Terry D. Houghton, and Joseph C. Judice on the same day it banned Valdes. The same week, Calder Race Course banned Rene Douglas and Jose A. Bracho, and Philadelphia Park banned Alex Beitia.

Douglas was not believed to have been involved in the betting conspiracy, and his ban was lifted. None of the other jockeys has been charged with anything, although many tracks upheld Tampa’s ban.
