Santa Anita included in planned Magna auction

Under a plan submitted in court on Friday, the first auction of bankrupt Magna Entertainment Corp. property will include Santa Anita Park and three other tracks.

Magna plans to accept bids until July 31 on Santa Anita, one of the track owner’s jewels, as well as Remington Park, Thistledown, and Portland Meadows. In this auction, Magna also plans to offer its Lone Star Park operations, the Shops at Santa Anita, as well as property in Ocala and Dixon, California.

The auction will not include Maryland Jockey Club tracks or the Preakness Stakes (G1). An earlier plan to include these properties drew objections from the city of Baltimore and the state of Maryland.

Bloomburg News reported the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware has accepted the plan.

Miller Buckfire & Co., which is marketing the Magna properties, reports 35 parties have executed the first step in participating in the auction, signing a confidentiality agreement. Another 35 have requested the agreement.

Parties must express interest in participating in bidding by May 27. Bids will be accepted until July 31. If required, an auction will be conducted on September 8 in New York.

Magna’s parent company, MI Developments Inc., has confirmed in writing that it will not bid on the properties. Frank Stronach chairs both Magna and MI Developments.

Magna will continue to explore all alternatives with assets not listed in the current auction. If acceptable offers are not received for properties, Magna will consider all restructuring options.
